Tour Montana Highway 200 – NW Montana

If you have not traveled Montana State Highway 200 from Dixon to Heron you are missing out on one of the most scenic highways in Montana. The highway is nestled between the Cabinet and Coeur 'd Alene mountain ranges and follows along the Flathead River to where it joins the Clark Fork River outside Paradise, MT then Highway 200 follows along the Clark Fork River until it flows into Lake Pend Oreille (Idaho), one of the deepest lakes in the United States.

Along the highway travelers will be greeted by small town hospitality in Dixon, Perma, Paradise, Wild Horse "Plains", Thompson Falls, Belknap, Trout Creek, Noxon and Heron. These rural communities offer lodging, shopping, entertainment, activities, restaurants, bars, casinos and services.

You will not be stopped by a stop light but quite possibly by a herd of Big Horn Sheep. Wild life is abundant. Stop by the National Bison Range, near Dixon or the Koo Koo Sint Big Horn Sheep viewing area between Plains and Thompson Falls. Keep your eyes peeled for wild turkeys, white tail deer, elk, moose and bear.

  • This is our version of a traffic jam. Slow down when you drive into town.

History buffs will enjoy visiting the area museums and stopping by historical points of interest like the Saleesh House, a trading post set up by explorer David Thompson. Geology buff? Learn about Glacial Lake Missoula and how it shaped the areas landscape millions of years ago. Hike to the many historic fire watch towers, built as a result of the devastating 1910 wild fire which destroyed millions of acres of land and helped shape fire control policies still used today.

The Clark Fork River and its tributaries offers the sportsman endless fishing opportunities all year round. Logging roads offer hundreds of miles of hiking, horseback riding, ATV/OHV, showshoeing and snowmobiling trails. If you come to the valley and want to experience local flavor you will want to visit on a weekend of a local event, the calendar is full and offers events including the famous Huckleberry Festival, the authentically country Sanders County Fair, a county wide yard sale extravaganza and the Thompson Falls Market.

What makes this segment of Highway 200 even more special? It's an area of Montana that not even most Montanans know about. This area offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
